Red Mass History ~ Louis IX of France
began the Red Mass tradition in 1245 at Notre Dame Cathedral in
Paris. The Red Mass tradition came to England in
1310 under Edward I and then to most European Catholic countries
as the official act for the opening of the Michaelmas terms of
court, (September to December) during which falls the "Feast of
St. Michael and All Angels" on September 29th.
The Red Mass is the solemn invocation of the Holy
Spirit for Divine wisdom and guidance for all whose grave
responsibility is to plead, interpret and apply the law for the
welfare of all individuals and the true progress of society.
The Red Mass is an annual reminder that the law is based upon
the eternal Law of God, as acknowledged in the preamble of the
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms - "Whereas Canada is
founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and
the rule of law..." .
